New Theme for a New Year
The church theme for 2004 is “God’s Work God’s Way.” We plan to bring the church to learn how we can minister one another with a right attitude. Instead of focusing on the “task,” we focus on people’s needs. In order to do that, we will promote serving as a team. We’re encouraging the church to attend a special seminar on Team Ministry on January 16-17. We have over sixty people signed up to attend the Friday and Saturday sessions. We also plan to use Rick Warren’s new book Purpose Driven Life, as teaching material for part of Sunday school curriculum this year. I pray that we will learn to have mutual respect and support in glorifying God through serving one another.

Invitation
We have invited the Roods (one of the missionaries we support) to come to share with us about their ministries in Japan on Friday (Jan 9). They will also be sharing with the English Sunday school on Sunday (Jan 11). Hope you will make time to attend to learn about their ministries and to be their prayer warriors.

Our Condolences
With great sadness, our brother Wing-Kei Lai went to be with the Lord. His funeral service was on December 27 in Vancouver . May the Lord comfort Alice and her families.

Welcome to the Family
Last month, during the Special Business Meeting, the church accepted five new members. They are Cheung Chu, Jane, and Ron (through Baptism), Sharon (through application), and Shiu Yin (through transfer). We pray that they will continue to grow at Southbay.

New Changes
Starting this year, other than a few special Sundays, we have decided not to have joint worships. This decision was made based on the growth of the church. Our joint worship services have filled to capacity during the latter part of 2002. We thank God for this “good problem,” and look forward to the church building project to get underway.

The Church Council approved the budget for Year 2003, submitted by the different service departments. The total budget is $298,287.57, making a monthly average of $24,857.30. The members will vote on this budget during the Business Meeting on December 29.

We will be seeking to call an English Pastor/Minister during Year 2003 to shepherd the English Congregation. If you know of anyone who has a calling, please refer to Pastor Larry.

Welcome to the Family!
With much joy, I want to welcome the new members of our church family. During the Business Meeting on December 16, we accepted the following brothers and sisters as our family member: Ruth (baptism), Wing (baptism), Susanna (baptism), Paul (baptism), Mann (baptism), Kathy (baptism), Mary (application), Bill (transfer), Richard (application), Esther (application), Philip (transfer), Mary Ann (transfer), Wendy (transfer), and Mike (transfer). On December 23, we had the baptismal service at Pastor Larry’s home. It was indeed a joyous day.

Missions Update
The team of five that left for Cambodia for three weeks of Short Term Missions on December 16 had safely arrived to their destination. They will return on January 7, 2002. I will try to update their ministries from time to time.

Congratulations!
Esther and Richard added another member to their family. Alexander arrived on November 16, a week before schedule. Both the mother and the baby are doing fine.

Welcome to the Family
We welcome three new members (Cathleen, Geoffrey, and Melody) to our church family. They were accepted as members by the church on December 17, 2000 and baptized on December 24. We had a good turnout at Pastor Larry’s home who witnessed their baptism. We praise God for a sunny December afternoon.

Praises
We praise God for bringing the two Christmas Celebrations to a close. We had a great time in both the English and the Chinese program. We had about 150-180 people attending each evening. Many of them were seekers. May the seed of the Gospel that sown through the "play" and the "message" continue to work in their hearts.

Please let us know
You’ve been receiving this newsletter for a while. If you have any comment, please let us know either by phone or e-mail. Since our web-page is already up and running, you can read the newsletter and the Scripture of the Month via the Internet. If you choose to do that instead of receiving a "hard copy," please let us know.

Happy Lunar New Year
I wish all of you a happy new year. This is the year of the Dog. In reality, I guess it doesn’t really mean too much what the “Dog” represents. I do pray that you will have an abundant year, that God will put a hedge around your family as protection, and that the Lord will guide you into successful endeavors.

World Christian Conference
There is an annual Missions conference to be held in Santa Cruz from February 17th through 20th. We thank God that we have twelve from our church who registered to attend. Pray that the Lord will continue to reveal His will in them through the keynote speaker and the workshop speakers.

Building Project Update
It has been a while since the last update of the building project. At this point, the steel structure engineer should be putting the latest update for the architect to review. At the same time, we will secure a structural engineer to do all the necessary calculations. Hopefully we will have all the drawings for submittal to the city in the Spring.

Building Project Update
We would like to thank everyone who participated in organizing the Fund Raising Dinner and other activities for the Building Project. At this point, we are about 80% of our target. While the architect continues to draw up the plan, the Building committee continues to meet to decide the next step. Regardless whether we will move forward to build at this time, we ask that the “Seed of Division” will be removed from among us. Please continue to pray for the project as the Lord moves you.

Purpose Driven Life
The church plans to use the book Purpose Driven Life as part of the whole church’s curriculum for adults Sunday school classes for three months, starting April. We want to emphasize that this is only a textbook; it is by no means to replace the true Textbook—the Bible. The book is to be viewed as a tool to learn what God intended Christians to do on earth. After that, we will resume the regular curriculum. If you haven’t joined our Sunday school yet, I invite you to join us every Sunday. Other than the Youth and the Children classes, we have three Chinese classes, starting at 9:30 am , and three English classes, starting at 11:00am . Look forward to seeing you.

Congratulations!
Engagements: Nick and Janely, and Kin and Charmine. Neither couple has decided on the wedding date yet. May God continue to bless their courtship.

Baby: The safe arrival of Sami from China (new baby of Philip and Mary Ann).

Congratulations!
Ray and Rhena were married on December 26, 2002. May God bless their marriage and shower blessings upon them as they begin to build a new family.

Wedding bells will finally be ringing for Frank and Yisi on February 8. May God bless their wedding day with plenty of memorable moments and may their marriage be built on Christ.

Congratulations also to Mr. & Mrs. Yu, whose daughter was married in January. May God pour blessings on them as well.

Church Building Update
We have invited our architect, Jack Christensen, and the potential general contractor, Larry Kent, to share with us the building project on February 2 during lunch. They made themselves available to answer any technical questions about the building project. We are almost at the point to submit for "Conditional Use Permit" with the city of San Jose. Please continue to pray for the project.

Getting Involved
The first "Work Day" this year is scheduled on February 15. You are more than welcome to come and participate in fixing up the church building to make it presentable for worship.

Our first ever ESL classes, headed by our Minister, Pinnie, started on January 20. We have a total of eight people who showed up. We are excited about this new ministry. May God continue to bless this work and provide strength to the teachers.

Building Project
We had just completed the extension of the second floor on the multipurpose hall. As we closed the “book” on that project, we have already faced with shortage of space. With the expansion of Self Control Fellowship into Young married couple group, Career group, and College group, we have to look for more rooms. With the increased number of Worship attendance, we’re almost filled to capacity in the Joint worships. Therefore, it is time to move ahead to build the Sanctuary. We plan to use 12 to 15 months for architectural design and to secure the building permit, and 9 to 12 months to complete the construction.

I’m excited about the project. With the current economic downturn, we must realize that this takes a leap of faith on everyone’s part. Therefore, I encourage you to join heart with me to pray for the Lord’s guidance and provision.

You are Invited !
The quarterly All-church Workday is scheduled on February 16. You are invited to spend a few hours to make the church building cleaner and better.

Finally, My wife and I wish all of you a Happy Lunar New Year. May God richly bless you and your family!
